New $5 has many new anti-counterfeit features

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. government introduced a new $5 bill on Thursday that includes purple ink, several watermarks and other security features to deter counterfeiters.
The bill features a large, purple numeral "5" on its back side and a purple seal on the front, continuing the increased use of color in the "greenbacks" that have long stood in drab contrast to the more elaborate bills used by many other countries.
The new bill, which will go into circulation in 2008, will include two watermarks -- a large numeral "5" to the right of the portrait of President Abraham Lincoln, and a column of smaller "5"s to Lincoln's left.
An embedded security thread, bearing the letters "USA" and the numeral "5" in an alternating pattern, runs vertically to the right of the portrait. The redesign of the $5 bill will also help protect against a method of counterfeiting that bleaches, or removes the ink from, a $5 bill and prints over it to create a fake $100 bill. By eliminating as many similarities as possible between the $5 and $100 denominations, the new design foils counterfeiting and protects U.S. currency users.

U.S. dollar facing imminent collapse?Fed in bind as Paulsen, Bernanke head to China

U.S. dollar facing imminent collapse?Fed in bind as Paulsen, Bernanke head to China
Even as the stock market is hitting new record highs almost every day, the Federal Reserve and Treasury Department are quietly coordinating a devaluation of the dollar that the Bush administration hopes will be a slow decline rather than a dollar collapse.
This week, in an unusual move, the Bush administration is sending virtually the entire economic "A-team" to visit China for a "strategic economic dialogue" in Beijing Dec. 14 and 15.
Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke are leading the delegation, along with five other cabinet-level officials, including Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez. Also in the delegation will be Labor Secretary Elaine Chao, Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt, Energy Secretary Sam Bodman, and U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab.

Canada's Dollar Rises to 33-Year High as Inflation Accelerates

Canada's dollar, nicknamed the loonie after the image of the national bird on the one-dollar coin, is the best performer against the U.S. dollar this year among the most-actively traded currencies. It has gained 21 percent since December, as prices of the nation's commodity exports surged and the U.S. dollar weakened. Canada's dollar reached parity with the U.S. dollar on Sept. 20 for the first time since 1976.
The currency rose 0.8 percent to $1.0349 at 4:25 p.m. in Toronto. It climbed as high as $1.0380. One U.S. dollar buys 96.63 Canadian cents.
Canadian inflation accelerated at the fastest pace since May 2006 in September. The consumer price index gained 2.5 percent from a year earlier, compared with a 1.7 percent rate in August, as gasoline climbed 13 percent, Statistics Canada said today in Ottawa. On a monthly basis, prices rose 0.2 percent from August.

New $5 Bill to Enter Circulation in January 2008 with Strong Anti-Counterfeit Protection

Counterfeiting has become a crime that costs the United States millions of dollars annually. With the new $5 bill that will enter circulation starting in January of 2008, the U.S. mint hopes that it will limit the opportunities for these criminals. Not only is the new $5 bill designed to limit the success of counterfeiters it is also designed with a new appearance for general use. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing has issued a press release describing the new security upgrades and appearance changes.According to the press release, last year alone the U.S. Secret Service and international authorities seized over $53 million in counterfeit bills before they entered circulation. $65 million were introduced into circulation before they were detected and removed. The new $5 bill which will enter circulation in January of 2008 has several new security features that are easily detectable to help businesses and consumers from falling victim to accepting counterfeit bills. The two key aspects are the watermarks and the security thread. There are two watermarks on the new $5 bill. There is a large number 5 watermark just to the right of the portrait on the bill. This $5 watermark replaces the watermark portrait of President Lincoln. The second watermark on the bill is a column of 3 smaller number 5's and it is just to the left of the portrait on the new $5 bill. The new security thread on the $5 bill will actually glow blue if you hold it under ultraviolet light. It is located to the right of the portrait on the new bill. The new security thread is a column of the letters USA and the number 5, alternating several times in the column.
